How Can numbness And Tingling With The Fingers Be Treated?

For years I have had a neck problem due to cervical spine degeneration following car, etc accidents. Periodically I have numbness & tingling in my fingers. Oct. 4th I had right eye cataract surgery which left me with difficulty judging depth & distance causing me to have a hard fall on concrete, landing on the palms of my hands. The pain was intense & continues, resulting in constant pain, weakness, numbness & tingling in my hands. I now have had four physiotherapy treatments including traction. There is no improvement. I am concerned about losing hand function. Any ideas? Thank you. Vivienne Parkes (73 years old)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Pain, weakness, numbness and tingling sensation are all symptoms of nerve compression which may be a result of the cervical spine degeneration. It may have been aggravated because of the recent injury you have described. I would advise you to get yourself checked by a neurosurgeon who will do a proper clinical examination and also advise an MRI of the cervical spine. Meanwhile Gabapentin may help to relieve the number and tingling sensation and you can take an over the counter painkiller like advil to relieve the pain. Thank you and wishing you good health.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
